About this ebook

Humanity survived by learning to live above the clouds, beneath the earth, and on the move.

Now one misunderstood girl may know what the damaged world is going to do next.

Saima left the privileged platform society of her birth to build a life with the nomadic Winterwillow Collective. Travelling across a heat-baked, dust-choked future Earth with her husbands Pallas and Markas, she is still learning where she belongs.

When Winterwillow reaches the underground Aberuthen Warren, they find another Collective stranded, its caravan destroyed—and a thirteen-year-old deaf girl named Rina accused of abducting a baby.

As a judge investigates the apparent crime, Saima uses her unusual empathic abilities to look past what everyone assumes about Rina. What she discovers changes the meaning of the abduction completely. But violent weather is already bearing down on the valley, and understanding Rina may matter to far more than one frightened family.

In a world still recovering from humanity’s environmental catastrophe, survival depends on recognizing the talents people carry—and on believing that change can mean something better.

Winds of Change is a thoughtful, hopeful solarpunk science fiction short story about belonging, communication, climate, found family and the unexpected forms human adaptation can take.

A short impactful and intriguing story. I was captivated by the unique idiosyncrasies of the people; landscape that was familiar but much altered; and the interactions between different groups in civilization. Relatable and yet unlike anything we know, it was a gripping and intense investigation of mysterious happenings set in a harsh landscape and complex underground world. Well written with insightful comments which enrich the story and make it a delight in which to immerse yourself.
