Elma Ariza is an independent brand and digital designer with more than twelve years of experience turning demanding clients into long-term partnerships. After building her own studio from her kitchen table in Austin, Texas, she has worked with startups, agencies, and established companies across the US and Europe, delivering everything from full brand identities to product design systems.
Throughout her career, Elma has made an unusual specialty of the conversations most designers dread: the scope battle, the unpaid invoice, the impossible deadline. Her clients often joke that they hire her twice — once for the design and once for the calm, orderly process she brings with it. That process, refined over hundreds of projects, is the foundation of this book.
Elma now splits her time between client work and teaching, leading workshops on pricing, client communication, and project management for designers at every stage of their careers. She writes a newsletter on the business of freelance design, mentors emerging designers through ADPList, and is a longtime member of AIGA. When she is not designing or teaching, she is probably rescuing yet another plant from her office windowsill, road-testing coffee shops in search of the perfect workspace, or sketching logo ideas for a fictional brand that will probably never exist.
