About this ebook
Welcome to the first installment in the captivating world of the internationally #1 bestselling Vampire Academy series, where love and loyalty run deeper than blood.
“We’re suckers for it.”—Entertainment Weekly
“With social angst that every teenager can appreciate and sexual tension that leaves Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight looking like a children’s book, this little gem is sure to be a hit.”—VOYA
Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. Her best friend Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir: a guardian whose blood is a powerful blend of vampire and human. Rose’s life is dedicated to protecting Lissa from the dangerous Strigoi—the fiercest vampires, who will stop at nothing to make Lissa one of them.
After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger . . . and the Strigoi are always close by.

I read this in a "you read this, I'll read that" kind of agreement with my girlfriend. I have not read the sequels yet. I honestly expected this book to be pretty bad, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Its YA-ness is very apparent, as the book tends to over-explain things, and it certainly has a melodramatic approach to romance, but overall it has a solid plot, believable characters, and a healthy distance from the clichés of recent vampire fiction (i.e. Female human meets male vampire, drama ensues). It borrows almost nothing from Twilight, and in fact seems to want to be more like Harry Potter, although it stays different enough from that as well to retain its individuality. Solid book, look forward to the sequels.
