About this ebook

Investing for Absolute Beginners is a detailed, practical guide to Investing Basics for Complete Beginners for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Scared to Start? What the Data Says, The Two Money Moves to Make Before Investing, How the Stock Market Actually Works, The 30 Investing Terms You Actually Need, Stocks, Bonds, ETFs, and Index Funds Explained, Index Funds vs. Picking Winners, Compound Interest and Why Time Beats Timing, Know Your Risk Tolerance in 10 Questions, 401(k), IRA, and Roth Made Simple, How to Choose the Right Brokerage, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Grace Lavender is a personal finance writer and educator who has spent her career making money make sense to people who were never taught it. For eight years she taught high school mathematics in Portland, Oregon, where she kept noticing the same thing: classroom after classroom of students could calculate compound interest perfectly on a quiz, yet no one — including most of the adults in the building — could say what that calculation meant for their own lives. She left teaching in 2016 to write about money in plain language and has been doing it ever since.

Her work focuses on the complete beginner: the person who keeps savings in a checking account, avoids the word "portfolio," and assumes investing is something other, richer people do. She is the author of several personal finance guides and a regular contributor to online publications and newsletters for new investors. Her own first investment was $50 in a mutual fund at age twenty-three, purchased with a paycheck she could barely spare — which is why she believes small starts and boring strategies beat brilliant ones every time. She teaches free investing basics workshops at public libraries, writes a popular newsletter for first-time investors, and lives in Portland with her partner and two extremely opinionated cats. When she isn't writing about index funds, she is hiking, baking bread, or explaining to her cats that no, they cannot have any.
