Maimonides

"Set against a rich historical background, Maimonides is a biography of the brilliant medieval Jewish philosopher, Moses ben Maimon, better known as Maimonides. . . . It is a welcome addition to the major body of Heschel's work in English." —Edmund Fuller, The Wall Street Journal

Heschel's classic work on Maimonides, originally published in Berlin during the 1930s, is one of the few scholarly biographies available of the great medieval philosopher and physician. Using both Maimonides's own writings and a wealth of research, Dr. Heschel has fashioned a moving story as well as a careful critique of Maimonides's thought, focusing on his conflict with Aristotelian tradition and on his magnum opus, The Guide for the Perplexed. This first English translation of an important work by the late Abraham Joshua Heschel fills the gap that has long been felt by both specialists and general readers.
