About this ebook

Some houses remember what the world tried to forget.

When three empty-nest friends purchase a neglected 1860s Greek Revival in San Antonio’s historic district, they believe they’re investing in a renovation project—and a fresh start.

They aren’t expecting the attic footsteps.

Or the woman in white.

Ellen has always been practical, skeptical, grounded in reality. But when strange occurrences escalate and long-buried records surface, even she can’t ignore the truth: the house is holding onto something.

Decades earlier, the property operated as a private medical residence for women—patients declared unstable, difficult, or hysterical. Their diagnoses were signed. Their confinement justified. Their stories erased.

Until now.

As Ellen, Sue, and Tanya dig into hospital archives, interview guarded neighbors, and uncover evidence someone doesn’t want exposed, they realize this isn’t just a haunting.

It’s a reckoning.

Because the women who suffered behind those walls were silenced in life.

And they will not remain silent in death.

In this gripping opening to the Mystery House Series, friendship, history, and the supernatural collide in a story about forgotten voices, buried truths, and three women brave enough to listen.

Content Note: This novel explores historical injustices, including references to sexual assault within the context of institutional abuse.

"They begin a dangerous quest digging into the real history behind the Gold House. What they find will blow your mind! My heart was racing throughout this entire book. If you believe in ghosts or even if you don't, I suggest reading by a lamp. I jumped several times as if a movie were playing inside my mind. . . . The three women in this book are wonderful. This is definitely a must-read. 5 stars for Eva! Well done!!"--Book Lover Reviews ★★★★★

"This captivating tale of three friends setting out to renovate and flip a house is definitely not your average haunted house story. The three lead characters and all the other people in this story (whether major players or merely peripheral persons) are so carefully crafted with their own unique personalities and attributes that they spring to life in the reader’s mind. The story, itself, is mesmerizing with all the back-story details of the characters’ lives and especially with the convoluted and macabre history of The Gold House (the house purchased by our leading ladies). This is one of those stories that is achingly hard to put down when bedtime rolls around or something requires your immediate attention. It really is that good."--txdoc, Amazon Reviewer ★★★★★

"This is a real page turner. Riveting, and exciting. The characters are very well written, its easy to read and you won't want to put it down."--Southermermaid85, Amazon Reviewer ★★★★★

it was okay... not as good as other reviews made it sound. Most disappointing is the story is advertised as 326 pages, it's only 181 pages. I probably wouldn't have bought it if those two truths had been available.

If you like Nancy Drew and Jessica in 'Murder She Wrote' you will love this book! I alternately felt shivers go down my spine, sympathetic tears fill my eyes, and contagious fits of giggling erupt. Very engaging with characters you grow to know and like. I can't wait to read more spooky mysteries (with a very low gore factor) starring Ellen and her two sidekicks, Tanya and Sue.

Goodness, I’d forgotten how much I loved Pohler’s writing. Her knack for storytelling is phenomenal. I feel like I became part of the story. The solid plot of this novel combines with the intricate descriptions to create a whole that I could really picture. There was a definite eerie feeling to the entire tale. The Story was mysterious but also very emotional. I enjoyed the history aspects as well as the mystery that winds its way through the tale. The historical psychology aspects were shocking & well researched. All in all, this novel was some good, clean fun. It was a fun story with characters that I truly enjoyed getting to know and a plot that kept me on my toes. Pohler has created some compelling & unique characters who are one of a kind & stand out without being too weird to connect with. The complex character development made them into friends, rather than simply storybook characters. Loved the different combining viewpoints of the characters and how each of their personalities stood out while also melding together. I appreciated how the characters’ entire lives came out in the story. It was about so much more than the mystery house. Hopes and dreams, laughter and fears filled the pages of this novel. My final thoughts on this one? Holy Smokes! Holy Smokes! Holy Smokes! Talk about a novel that was simultaneously hard hitting, thought provoking, and endlessly fun. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.
