Quint Angela is a cognitive performance researcher and productivity systems designer whose work sits at the intersection of environmental psychology, neuroscience, and professional practice. Over the past twelve years, she has developed attention management protocols for more than forty organizations, including three Fortune 500 companies, two government agencies, and a leading technology research institute.
Angela's interest in focus and distraction began during her own professional struggles with attention. After earning her degree in cognitive science from the University of California, Berkeley, she entered the technology sector as a product manager, where she experienced firsthand the difficulty of sustaining deep focus in an open-plan office with constant messaging, email, and meeting demands. Rather than accepting distraction as an inevitable cost of modern knowledge work, she began systematically studying the factors that enabled or undermined concentrated work. This personal investigation evolved into a formal research practice, drawing on environmental psychology, cognitive load theory, and organizational behavior.
Her key insight—that deep focus is primarily a function of environment and system design rather than willpower—emerged from observing patterns across hundreds of professionals in different industries, roles, and work environments. Angela found that individuals with strong focus were not necessarily more disciplined than their distracted peers. They had simply built systems that made focus the default rather than the exception. This observation became the foundation of the Focus Protocol, which she developed and refined over five years of iterative testing with client organizations.
Before developing the Focus Protocol, Angela led attention management workshops at the Harvard Decision Science Lab and served as a consultant for the Stanford Center on Longevity, where she advised on technology's impact on cognitive function across the lifespan. Her work has been published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, the Harvard Business Review, and Behavioral Scientist. She has been a featured speaker at SXSW, the World Economic Forum's Digital Economy Summit, and the annual conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
Angela currently lives in Portland, Oregon, where she runs a small research and consulting practice focused on attention in the workplace. She is an avid trail runner and a slow but dedicated reader of Victorian novels. She maintains that her own focus is far from perfect—a confession she offers not as false modesty but as evidence that the protocol works even for its creator. The Focus Protocol is her first book.
