About this ebook

What does the Bible actually teach about spiritual manifestations and unusual experiences attributed to the Holy Spirit?

What should Christians make of being “slain in the Spirit,” falling under the power, uncontrollable crying, shaking, trembling, convulsions, unusual physical reactions, prophetic manifestations, spiritual intoxication, fainting, dancing, speaking in tongues, and other experiences sometimes presented as evidence of the Holy Spirit?

These questions have become increasingly important for Christians who want to distinguish genuine biblical Christianity from teachings, practices, and experiences that may not have the biblical foundation they are sometimes given.

Testing the Spirits takes a careful, Scripture-centered look at these difficult questions and asks the question that must ultimately govern every spiritual claim: What does the Bible actually teach?

Beginning with the biblical foundation of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit-filled Christian life, this book examines what Scripture teaches about spiritual gifts, manifestations, prophecy, tongues, worship, discernment, and the work of the Holy Spirit. It then turns to some of the most controversial experiences found in modern Christian gatherings, including being “slain in the Spirit,” falling under the power, uncontrollable crying, shaking and convulsions, unusual vocalizations, spiritual intoxication, temporary paralysis, dancing, fainting, and other prophetic or ecstatic behaviors.

But this is not simply a book about unusual manifestations.

It is a book about biblical discernment.

What happens when an experience becomes more authoritative than Scripture? How can Christians distinguish between a genuine work of the Holy Spirit and an interpretation that has been placed upon a physical or emotional experience? Can expectation, group influence, learned behavior, suggestion, emotion, or physical responses help explain some manifestations? When does a personal testimony become a doctrine? How should believers respond when something appears spiritual but cannot be clearly established from Scripture?

These questions require more than personal opinion.

They require the Word of God.

The Bible does not call believers to accept every spiritual claim without examination. Scripture calls God's people to test the spirits, examine what they hear, hold fast to what is good, and remain grounded in truth. The purpose of biblical discernment is not to create suspicion toward everything spiritual, but to protect believers from deception while helping them recognize what genuinely produces the character and fruit of the Holy Spirit.

This book therefore refuses two extremes. It does not ask Christians to believe every unusual manifestation simply because someone calls it the work of the Holy Spirit, but neither does it encourage believers to become cynical toward the supernatural work of God. Instead, it seeks a more faithful path in which spiritual experiences are examined according to Scripture, spiritual gifts are understood within their biblical context, and the fruit of the Spirit becomes more important than the intensity of a moment.

If you have ever searched for answers to questions such as “Is being slain in the Spirit biblical?”, “What does the Bible say about falling under the power?”, “Are Holy Spirit manifestations biblical?”, “How do Christians test the spirits?”, or “How can I discern whether a spiritual experience is from God?”, this book was written with those questions in mind.

Whether you come from a Pentecostal, charismatic, evangelical, or non-charismatic background, you will find an invitation to examine these questions honestly, carefully, and without unnecessary hostility. The goal is not to ridicule sincere believers or to make every spiritual experience suspect. The goal is to place every claim beneath the authority of Scripture and to help believers walk with greater wisdom, freedom, humility, and confidence in Christ.

Ultimately, the Christian life is not about pursuing manifestations.

It is about following Jesus.

Experiences may come and go. Emotions may rise and fall. Crowds may become enthusiastic, movements may become popular, and particular manifestations may capture attention for a season. But Christ remains the Shepherd of His people, Scripture remains the foundation of truth, and the Holy Spirit's work ultimately points us toward the Son.

Test everything. Hold fast to what is good. Keep your eyes on Christ.
