About this ebook

INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The former attorney general provides a candid account of his historic tenures serving two vastly different presidents, George H.W. Bush and Donald J. Trump.

William Barr’s first tenure as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush was largely the result of chance, while his second tenure under President Donald Trump a deliberate and difficult choice. In this candid political memoir, Barr takes readers behind the scenes during seminal moments of the 1990s, from the LA riots to Pan Am 103 and Iran Contra. Thirty years later, Barr faced an unrelenting barrage of issues, such as Russiagate, the COVID outbreak, civil unrest, the impeachments, and the 2020 election fallout. One Damn Thing After Another is vivid, forthright, and essential not only to understanding the Bush and Trump legacies, but also how both men viewed the rule of law, power, and justice at critical junctures of their presidencies.

Barr’s unflinching account offers a rare look at:

  • The Trump and Bush Administrations: A study in contrast, from the steady hand of George H.W. Bush to the unrelenting political storms of the Trump White House.
  • Department of Justice Insider: Go behind the scenes of the DOJ to witness firsthand the response to seminal events like the LA riots, the Pan Am 103 bombing, and Iran Contra.
  • Russiagate and the 2020 Election: Get an unfiltered look at the investigations that defined a presidency, including the Mueller report, the impeachments, and the contentious aftermath of the 2020 election.
  • Executive Power and the Law: Explore the critical constitutional questions and challenges to the rule of law that confronted two administrations at historic turning points.

Right off Barr confesses anger by the attempts of Democrats to "delegitimize" Trump's election. To be honest, Barr should have made clear the opposing candidate EARNED 3,000 MORE VOTES than Trump but didn't get the job. He should have acknowledged the impact Russian interference had on the losing candidate's chance's, an attack well proven by Mueller AND accepted by Republicans. He should have mentioned the voters never knew what his own Justice Department knew until it was too late. What else could any fair minded person expect from Democratic voters? Silence? Nothing we have learned about Republican commitment to dominate all politics, nothing we have learned about Republican unconstitutional acts to protect Trump and satisfy his cupidity, nothing we have seen in Trump's actions to this day make the 2016 election results die a natural death. Trump's actions forbid it. The people know what we saw, heard, learned. Liberal means "a reader". We READ. We bother to read.

I have the physical copy of this book. It sits on my shelf between Robert C. Byrd's book "Losing America," and Barack Obama's book "A Promised Land." Overall, while lengthy, "One Damn Thing After Another" is a really good read with a bit of humor in it. It's heavy on the politics and history, too, which means you get a good education from it. It's worth picking up if you're into politics. It gives you an in-depth feel for what the political atmosphere was like between the administrations of 41 and 45, and it does it well.

Barr retired in 2008 after fifteen years as general counsel of GTE Corporation and its successor company, Verizon, after which he served on a number of corporate boards and consulted for corporate clients.
