About this ebook

What happens when revolutionary ideas consume an entire town — turning idealists into murderers and mentors into accomplices?

In a provincial Russian town, the arrival of the charismatic nihilist Pyotr Verkhovensky sets off a chain of conspiracy, betrayal, and violence. At the moral center stands Nikolai Stavrogin — a brooding aristocrat whose spiritual emptiness exerts an irresistible and devastating pull over everyone around him. Together they ignite a revolutionary cell willing to commit any crime, including killing one of their own, to protect their cause.

Written in response to a real political murder that shook Russia in 1869, Demons is Dostoyevsky's most ferociously political novel — a prophetic indictment of nihilism and radical ideology that reads with frightening clarity today. Set against the backdrop of pre-revolutionary Imperial Russia, the novel weaves dark comedy, psychological drama, and escalating tragedy into one of literature's most unsettling visions of ideas unmoored from morality.

Essential reading for those drawn to Russian literature, political philosophy, and psychological fiction — and for anyone who has ever wondered how ordinary people become instruments of destruction.
