Fate brought them together. War divided them for decades. Nothing can keep them apart.

To save her runaway brother from an angry Crown, Charlotte Ashley disguises herself and takes his place as a runner in the Great War, never expecting to find her soulmate in the trenches of France: sullen sniper Alex Rook.

Torn from him in battle, convinced her love has perished, Ashley spends the next twenty years haunted by the ghosts of what might have been.

The Unknown Birds absolutely kept me engaged. It is a story of the devastation of war, the close bonds that developed between the soldiers of Ash and Rook's regiment, and a very slow burn love story. Historical fiction with a strong romance sub-plot, it is told in single POV and in a split timeline. I thought the split timeline was particularly good, set literally in the trenches of France during WWI, and then in England just before the outbreak of WWII.
