About this ebook

"Deeply complex and carefully crafted, this novel is a thrilling question mark all the way to the end, and it puts North’s storytelling skills on full display.... The Angel Maker, his best so far, is a superb addition to his already impressive oeuvre."–NPR

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Whisper Man and The Shadows comes a dark, suspenseful new thriller about the mysteries of fate, the unbreakable bond of siblings, and a notorious serial killer who was said to know the future.

Growing up in a beautiful house in the English countryside, Katie Shaw lived a charmed life. At the cusp of graduation, she had big dreams, a devoted boyfriend, and a little brother she protected fiercely. Until the day a violent stranger changed the fate of her family forever.

Years later, still unable to live down the guilt surrounding what happened to her brother, Chris, and now with a child of her own to protect, Katie struggles to separate the real threats from the imagined. Then she gets the phone call: Chris has gone missing and needs his big sister once more.

Meanwhile, Detective Laurence Page is facing a particularly gruesome crime. A distinguished professor of fate and free will has been brutally murdered just hours after firing his staff. All the leads point back to two old cases: the gruesome attack on teenager Christopher Shaw, and the despicable crimes of a notorious serial killer who, legend had it, could see the future.

This definitely gets points for creativity, and it kept me engaged, but that didn't make up for just how confused and jarred I felt the whole time I was reading this. The chapters are very short, which means it goes quickly, but with this many POVs, it means that you don't make it far with any particular character before moving on, and I found myself having to constantly go back and remind myself where we left off with them.

I really liked Whisper Man and The Shadows got me completely hooked on this author and so I had high hopes for this book. I mean the title "The Angel Maker" and a killer (the infamous Jack Lock) that knew the future (though not well enough to avoid capture by the police). So very intriguing! I did get through this very quickly, there was never a dull moment from the beginning with Michael attacking Chris and then Alan with his odd death and surprising actions, almost like he knew the future.

The author should have devoted the time he spent unsuccessfully removing cues that this novel is set in England to actually creating suspense. Did his publisher require this ? The resulting wording for people, places and things sounds peculiar and neither British nor American; almost as if AI was involved.
