About this ebook

Most people think they know what they are hearing in the wild — an elk bugle, a distant gunshot, a coyote howl.

But your ears are easily fooled.

Seeing Sound reveals how distance, terrain, weather, and human-made calls distort reality — and how modern signal processing exposes the truth hidden inside every sound.

Written by a retired NASA engineer and lifelong hunter, this book combines field experience with real acoustic science to show you how animal vocalizations, gunshots, and environmental sounds actually behave as they travel through the world.

This is not a theory book.

It is a listening book — built for people who rely on sound for decisions that matter.

Inside you’ll learn:

• Why real animal calls never stay clean and steady

• How spectrograms and wavelets reveal what your ears miss

• How echoes, trees, and wind change pitch and timing

• How synthetic calls betray themselves

• How to estimate distance and direction from sound alone

• How wildlife agencies and land managers use acoustic monitoring

• Why phone microphones can now outperform old field recorders

You will discover how elk, deer, coyotes, birds, and even hunters leave unique acoustic fingerprints that can be detected, measured, and classified — even when you can’t see them.

Whether you are a hunter, wildlife professional, audio engineer, or curious listener, this book will permanently change how you hear the outdoors.

Once you learn to see sound, you can never unhear it.

This book completely changed how I listen outdoors. The author clearly explains how distance, terrain, and weather shape what we hear—and why our ears are often fooled. This isn’t just theory. The book connects real hunting and wildlife situations with practical sound analysis in a way that’s easy to follow but still insightful. After reading it, you will start noticing patterns in animal sounds you never paid attention to before. If you rely on sound in the field, this book is worth it!

This is a really unique book and an interesting read with a lot of material I had not previously considered. With spectrograms, wavelets, and practical tips, it teaches you to estimate range/direction, spot fakes, and "see" sound. Accessible, anecdote-rich, and transformative—completely changed how I listen in the woods. A must-read for bioacoustics fans or anyone relying on ears outdoors.
