About this ebook

One mysterious word. One dangerous mission. A journey deep into enemy territory.

First published in 1916, Greenmantle is John Buchan’s thrilling sequel to The Thirty-Nine Steps and one of the early classics of espionage and wartime adventure fiction.

With the First World War raging across Europe, Richard Hannay is called upon for a highly dangerous intelligence mission. British officials believe that Germany is attempting to exploit political and religious unrest in the East, potentially changing the course of the war. The evidence is scarce, the enemy is everywhere, and Hannay has only a handful of clues—including one mysterious word: Greenmantle.

Joined by the resourceful Sandy Arbuthnot, the experienced Peter Pienaar, and the unforgettable American John S. Blenkiron, Hannay enters enemy territory under a false identity. Their separate paths take them through wartime Germany, across dangerous borders and ultimately toward Constantinople, where an extraordinary conspiracy is beginning to reveal itself.

What follows is a fast-moving adventure filled with secret identities, coded information, intelligence networks, narrow escapes, political intrigue and unexpected alliances. Yet at its heart, Greenmantle is also a story about friendship, endurance and the courage to continue when success seems almost impossible.

More than a century after its original publication, Buchan’s novel remains fascinating for its atmosphere, pace and place in the development of the modern spy thriller. It also offers contemporary readers a vivid glimpse into the fears, attitudes and political imagination of the First World War era.

This Illustrated Edition from Open Book House Publishing and Solutions presents Buchan’s classic adventure with original black-and-white illustrations, along with specially prepared supplementary material designed to enrich the reading experience.

An enduring classic for readers who enjoy historical thrillers, espionage fiction, wartime adventures and the great Richard Hannay stories.

About the author

John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, journalist, lawyer and statesman, best remembered for his influential adventure and espionage fiction. His fast-moving stories of secret missions, political intrigue and ordinary men caught in extraordinary circumstances helped shape the modern spy thriller.

Born in Perth, Scotland, Buchan studied at the University of Glasgow and later at Oxford. Alongside his literary career, he worked in publishing, government and public service. His experiences in politics and wartime information work gave him an unusual understanding of international affairs, intelligence and the tensions surrounding the First World War—elements that frequently found their way into his fiction.

Buchan created one of his most memorable characters, Richard Hannay, in The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915). Hannay returned in Greenmantle (1916), an ambitious adventure that carries its characters across wartime Europe and towards Constantinople on a dangerous intelligence mission. Buchan continued Hannay’s adventures in several later novels.

In addition to his thrillers, Buchan wrote historical novels, biographies, essays and works of history. His public career was equally distinguished. In 1935, he became Governor General of Canada, serving in that position until his death in 1940.

More than a century after their publication, Buchan’s best-known novels continue to be read for their brisk storytelling, memorable characters, atmosphere of danger and important place in the development of espionage fiction.

R. Sharma is the illustrator of this special edition of Greenmantle. The illustrations have been created to complement John Buchan’s classic story while preserving the atmosphere and character of its First World War setting.

Inspired by the traditional pen-and-ink illustrations and engravings found in early twentieth-century adventure books, the artwork uses expressive line work, cross-hatching and carefully composed scenes to capture the novel’s world of secret missions, dangerous journeys, wartime landscapes and political intrigue.

Rather than interrupting the reader’s imagination, the illustrations are intended to provide visual glimpses into important moments of Richard Hannay’s journey—from shadowy meetings and distant cities to the rugged landscapes and dangers encountered along the way.

Through these illustrations, R. Sharma brings a fresh visual dimension to Greenmantle while respecting the historical character and adventurous spirit of John Buchan’s original novel.
