INTRODUCTION BY JOHN A. MACKAY
I. FIRST LETTER TO THE FRENCH PROTESTANTS
(Dec. 1939)
II. SECOND LETTER TO THE FRENCH PROTESTANTS
(Oct. 1940)
III. A LETTER TO GREAT BRITAIN FROM SWITZERLAND
(April 1941)
KARL BARTH, the author of the letters that make up this small volume, is the best known and most influential of living Christian thinkers. The letters themselves were written by Barth, now a professor in the University of Basle, to the Christian Churches in France and Great Britain in the course of the last two years. The first was penned before the German onslaught sealed the doom of the French Republic; the second, after France had fallen and was bleeding in prostrate agony. The third letter was addressed to Great Britain in the spring after the Royal Air Force had repelled the would-be German invaders from the shores of England. It requires only to read the contents of these documents to be convinced, whether one agrees or not with the sentiments they contain, that they are among the most significant Christian utterances relating to the present conflict.
