About this ebook

This book uses Tarlabaşı and Beyoğlu as a starting point to examine a much larger idea: wealth and power come not simply from owning individual assets, but from the networks connecting them. Through examples ranging from Istanbul’s housing, parking, commercial streets and urban redevelopment to Ottoman strategic geography, Crimea and Romania, it argues that maximizing one building, parcel or territory can actually weaken the larger system that gives it value. For Istanbul, the alternative is coordinated redevelopment: combining parcels at island scale, using additional zoning to finance earthquake-safe housing, protecting existing residents and businesses, capturing part of newly created land value for the public, and exploiting the city’s hills and underground space more intelligently. Tarlabaşı therefore becomes a laboratory for a broader principle: a successful city does not merely create more real estate; it organizes land, people, infrastructure, capital and commercial networks so that each makes the others more valuable.

About the author

About the Author

Bilal İslamoğlu is a Turkish writer and independent researcher with an academic background in economics whose work explores the connections between economic history, cities, population, housing, and political power. Rather than examining buildings, institutions, or historical events in isolation, he focuses on the networks that connect them and on how those relationships create or destroy long-term value. In Tarlabaşı: Housing, Networks, and the Future of Beyoğlu, İslamoğlu brings this perspective to Istanbul, combining historical analysis with observations of the contemporary city to explore how zoning, redevelopment, infrastructure, public ownership, commercial networks, and Istanbul’s unusual geography could be coordinated to create a denser, safer, and more economically inclusive city.
