About this ebook

This report is designed to show the relevance of the MRIO model for transportation analyses. Although the original MRIO interregional trade data are available for 79 industries and 51 regions of the United State for 1963, 1970, and 1980, the analysis for this report was made using the results of a 10-industry and 9-region aggregation of these original data, with primary concentration on the 1963 data. This analysis provides insight into the broad industrial and regional differences in interregional trade, which can later be analyzed in more detail. One of the primary purposes of the report is to show how graphs can be used to display the results of the MRIO calculations and the usefulness of graphical displays for interpreting results of calculations involving large quantities of data. Analyses are made of the regional distribution of production and consumption of the eight transported commodities and of the interregional trade components (crosshauls, crossflows, net transfers, outflows, and inflows) for selected commodities. The most intensive analysis is made for three commodities: mining, fabrics and textiles, and transportation equipment and ordnance, with special emphasis placed upon the interregional trade flows to and from two regions: the East North Central and the West North Central.
