About this ebook

Grant leaves the door ajar, a stepson who might only have come in to say the ride was fine. Miles stays on the bed with the evidence drying on his chest and the television still selling something down the hall. By breakfast the form will be in Grant’s jacket. By the time their father asks about eggs, the yes will already be in the room.

It starts smaller than that. One name from the house. A fee their father will not pay twice. Evenings in the garage, because Grant says the work sticks then, and Miles wants the board badly enough to show up. A bench save held a second too long. A knuckle at the hip while a phone call runs in the kitchen. Both of them can still call it training. Grant needs that word. It keeps his size, his corner, and the praise in the car in the same column. Miles needs the line on the sheet, and he will not ask for the weight where the clocks are.

The lock turns from the inside. A sprawl does not reset. After that the sessions keep the shape of correction: a kneel or a walk, a phone set face-down, a note that says not to chase. Grant holds the spring posting the way he holds a neck in front of a partner and answers, flat, step. Miles hears the price. A clean no would mean saying, in the truck, what the extra nights were. Their father films the win, calls the corner the only adult thing in the building, and never opens the bag.

Miles says put it in. The sheet is not the only thing that gets entered. What the posting costs him is still in Grant’s hand.
