Willie J Welch is a writer and writing instructor who has published over two hundred flash fiction stories in magazines including SmokeLong Quarterly, Flash Fiction Online, Vestal Review, and Bath Flash Fiction Award anthologies. His work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and included in the *Best Small Fictions* anthology. He teaches flash fiction workshops through the Flash Fiction Collective and the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop, where he focuses on the intersection of craft and marketability.
Willie began writing flash fiction after a decade of struggling to complete novels. The discipline of the thousand-word limit taught him compression, precision, and the value of trusting his readers. That experience led him to develop the frameworks in *Flash Fiction That Sells*, which he has taught to over three thousand students across online and in-person workshops.
His students have published in markets ranging from *The New Yorker* to small genre zines, and several have gone on to publish flash fiction collections of their own. He believes that any writer can learn to write marketable flash fiction with the right combination of craft techniques, consistent practice, and a strategic approach to submissions.
Willie lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife and two cats. When he isn't writing or teaching, he hikes the Columbia River Gorge and reads everything he can find about narrative structure, from Aristotle to video game design. He maintains a weekly newsletter at williejwelch.substack.com where he shares market calls, craft tips, and the occasional rant about the Oxford comma.
*Flash Fiction That Sells* is his first book.
