Legend holds that when a ship goes down on Lake Superior, the Indian Drum sounds once for each soul that is lost. In a small Kansas farm town lives Alan Conrad, who as a child received annual payments from an anonymous source in Chicago. The connecting link is shipping magnate Ben Corvet, who deeds his home and position to Alan, sends a message summoning him to Chicago, and then vanishes into a storm without a trace. In order to solve the mystery of his own identity, Alan must discover Corvet's fate, despite the forces fighting to keep him from uncovering the dark secret of the past revealed by the sounding of the Indian Drum.
