About this ebook
“A Study In Shadows,” written by William John Locke in the early twentieth century, portrays the inner awakening of Felicia Graves, a young Englishwoman living in the bleak Pension Boccard in Geneva while struggling with isolation and questions of identity. Orphaned and sent there by well-meaning relatives, Felicia shares a table with six lonely women whose stories of loss and disappointment gradually expose her to aspects of life she has never known. Initially naïve and sheltered, she begins to grasp the complexity of human sorrow and connection, forming a quiet but meaningful bond with Mrs. Stapleton, a widowed woman shaped by personal failure and endurance. As summer approaches and the anticipated arrival of Raine Chetwynd, the professor’s son, draws near, the novel hints at emotional shifts that will further complicate Felicia’s journey toward self-understanding.
