Before the Real Housewives, there were Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley. William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863) was a novelist and satirist. Born in Calcutta, India, Thackeray moved to England as a child following his father's death. After finishing school, he initially looked into a career in art before turning to writing.
