Kate hated her stepmother. She truly hated the woman. She had no idea how her father had fallen for her, but even more than that how a parent could turn a blind eye to how the other adult in his house could treat a child. Kate had grown up in last place to her step brothers and her half siblings. So when she grew up she had no interaction with them if it not forced. There was no place for the group of them except her younger brother.
When she was an adult, she had made sure, no one could ever hurt her again. When a new detective comes into the station, she works at in a pilot program she knew he was trouble. She stayed away and was cold to him, but one day he walks into her office with a question. That question changed both their lives as they had to find the unspoken lies that her stepmother had done int eh past that would change their futures greatly.
