Warriors, seafarers, diplomats and traders of the Isles of southern Armorica, the Veneti freely conducted trade from Albion to Byzantium unhindered for eons. But persuaded, and later blackmailed, into Roman governorship, their livelihood comes under threat, and a some of their kin make the grave error of taking Roman soldiers hostage. Their druid decrees that a great sacrifice is needed to secure the favour of the Gods and defeat the Romans, who are sure to retaliate.
Sorcha, but a child at the time, wins the honour to be a divine sacrifice and have an audience with the Gods. But first she must make the sacred pilgrimage Mon, to meet Taliesin, High Merlin of Albion. For it is said that he awaits the arrival of a particular soul, who will aid him to reshape the future; Taliesin recognises Sorcha as that soul. But before the High Merlin can help her realise her extraordinary destiny many centuries in the future, he must allow her to pursue her life in ancient Gallia, where her homeland and kin have just been decimated.
One of the last of her clan, Sorcha swears a vindicta against Gaius Julius Caesar and all those responsible for the genocide of her kindred.
