A woman discovers her fiancé's double life—and wonders if he's capable of murder—in this twisty mystery from a Grand Master Award–winning author.

Lacy Wales is engaged to Richard Blake, a charming government bureaucrat who travels the world on confidential assignments. His unpredictable schedule has kept the couple from setting a wedding date, but Richard gifted Lacy with an emerald engagement ring, proving his investment in their future. Unfortunately, she misplaced it.

Then Lacy finds herself revisiting her past when she's contacted by an old school friend, Rose Mendez. She is convinced that someone is trying to kill her and wants Lacy to ask her legal employer for assistance. Rose's ex-husband has stopped paying her alimony and her current husband needed those funds to pay off debts. But before she can uncover which spouse she fears wants to harm her, Rose dies, right in front of Lacy. Even more shocking, Lacy finds a framed photograph of Richard in Rose's house.

The police discover that Rose was poisoned. Already a suspect for being at the scene of the crime, Lacy reveals nothing about knowing Richard, believing the man in the photo cannot be him. But when the police find a marriage certificate for Richard and Rose—and an emerald engagement ring—Lacy finds herself questioning if she truly knows Richard at all . . .

作者简介

Mignon G. Eberhart (1899–1996) wrote dozens of mystery novels over nearly sixty years. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, she began writing in high school, swapping English essays with her fellow students in exchange for math homework. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, and in the 1920s began writing fiction in her spare time, publishing her first novel, The Patient in Room 18, in 1929. With the follow-up, While the Patient Slept (1931), she won a $5,000 Scotland Yard Prize, and by the end of the 1930s she was one of the most popular female mystery writers on the planet.

Before Agatha Christie ever published a Miss Marple novel, Eberhart wrote romantic crime fiction with female leads. Eight of her books, including While the Patient Slept and Hasty Wedding (1938), were adapted for film. Elected a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master in 1971, Eberhart continued publishing roughly a book a year until the 1980s. Her final novel, Three Days for Emeralds, was published in 1988.
