About this ebook

A ne'er-do-well exploits his gentle daughter's beauty for social advancement in this masterpiece of tragic fiction. Hardy's 1891 novel defied convention to focus on the rural lower class for a frank treatment of sexuality and religion. Then and now, his sympathetic portrait of a victim of Victorian hypocrisy offers compelling reading.

It begins as if nothing could go wrong, but, oh-ho, it does and never seems to pick up again. Frankly Tess was a bit too naive to begin with. In short run as fast as you can from this book. You'll thank me later.

A horrible book. Everything terrible happens to her, and she withstands it almost to the end, then gives in just before salvation comes, and is therefore lost and basically goes crazy. Waste of time.

'Tess' is a good book and is complex in structure. Hardy's tendency to foreshadow Tess' many misfortunes subsequently gives this novel a strong dramatic tone which for me might have been slightly excessive. Therefore I personally prefer one of Hardy's more light hearted novels such as 'Far from the madding crowd'.
