One cold October night, a strange carnival suddenly appeared in the town of Bellweather. There had been no posters, workers, trucks, or signs that it was coming. At 11:59 p.m., the field near the old railway station was empty. At midnight, it was filled with striped tents, bright lanterns, game booths, food stalls, and a huge Ferris wheel.
Sixteen-year-old Rina Vale saw the carnival lights from her bedroom window. She also heard cheerful music mixed with a slow and heavy ticking sound. Curious and worried, she contacted her three best friends: Caleb, Omar, and Sophie.
The four friends met at the field while still wearing jackets over their pajamas. Caleb brought a flashlight, batteries, and a first-aid kit. Omar carried biscuits because he believed food was useful in every emergency. Sophie brought her sketchbook and watched the unusually tall Ferris wheel.
At the carnival entrance, they saw a red sign that read, Madame Vesper’s Carnival of Endless Wonders. Beneath it stood a huge black clock with silver numbers and only one hand. Strangely, the hand moved backward instead of forward.
When the clock reached midnight, the iron gates opened by themselves. A pale man in a crimson coat welcomed the friends and said they had arrived with time to spare.
The friends did not yet know the terrible truth. Madame Vesper was a powerful witch who had stayed alive for centuries by stealing one hour of life from every visitor. The backward clock was not broken—it was feeding her.
To escape, the friends would have to face their fears, resist perfect dreams, win four dangerous carnival games, enter the Maze of Tomorrow, and recover the clock’s missing golden hand.
If they failed, they would lose their future and become trapped in the carnival forever.
