eBook 정보
Set during the dark days of the Spanish Inquisition, The Pit and the Pendulum begins with a death sentence. The narrator is cast into a dungeon. As he stumbles through the shadows, he discovers a massive opening in the centre of his cell—the Pit. But the horror doesn't stop there. He soon finds himself strapped to a wooden frame, looking up to see a heavy pendulum swinging far above. It’s deadly, because with every stroke, it descends closer to his chest. This story focuses almost entirely on the sensory experience of terror. Poe taps into universal phobias—claustrophobia, the fear of falling, and the agony of waiting for the inevitable.

The man behind this descent into madness, Edgar Allan Poe, lived a life that was often as gloomy as his fiction. Born in 1809, Poe was a pioneer of the short story and is often credited with inventing the detective fiction genre. His personal life was shadowed by the loss of almost everyone he loved to tuberculosis, and he struggled with poverty and a lack of recognition during his lifetime. Poe wrote The Pit and the Pendulum when he lived in a state of constant anxiety. When you read his descriptions of torture, you are reading Poe’s own exploration of helplessness and the human will to survive against impossible odds.
