À propos de cet e-book

The Nights We Called Normal follows Maren Holt, a forty-two-year-old night operations supervisor who has spent sixteen years working while most of the fictional coastal city of Larkhaven sleeps. At Aster Quay Hotel, Maren has built an entire life around permanent overnight work. She knows when her concentration is strongest, when exhaustion usually arrives, how to protect daytime sleep, and how to organize relationships around hours most people consider unusual. The routine is demanding, but its predictability has allowed her to become one of the hotel's most dependable employees.

Everything changes when management replaces permanent night teams with a rotating schedule designed to distribute unpopular hours more fairly. Employees begin moving between mornings, afternoons, evenings, and overnight shifts, and a timetable that looks balanced on paper quickly produces unexpected consequences. Maren watches colleagues struggle with constant transitions, changing sleep patterns, reduced concentration, and free days that become preparation for the next shift rather than genuine time away from work. More unsettlingly, she discovers that she is not adapting nearly as easily as the identity she has built around endurance tells her she should.

Determined to prove that the new schedule is flawed, Maren begins recording how different shift patterns affect the way employees function. Her notes reveal that rapid rotation is creating real difficulties, but they also expose something she never intended to investigate. The permanent night schedule she has defended for years provided valuable stability, yet it also allowed her to normalize chronic tiredness, social isolation, interrupted recovery, missed daytime experiences, and a workplace culture in which night employees quietly accepted additional burdens because they were proud of being able to handle them.

As Maren becomes involved in redesigning the hotel's scheduling system, the problem grows more complicated. Some workers genuinely prefer permanent nights, others function better on mornings or evenings, and some need variation because of family, education, or personal responsibilities. A schedule that feels stable to one person can become restrictive to another. Maren gradually realizes that fairness cannot simply mean giving everyone the same inconvenience, just as health cannot be reduced to finding one ideal routine that every person should follow.

The Nights We Called Normal is a contemporary Health, mind & body novel about sleep, fatigue, attention, work, recovery, stress, personal boundaries, resilience, and the ways people can become proud of surviving patterns they have stopped examining. Rather than presenting night work as inherently wrong or daytime life as automatically healthier, the story explores how stability, choice, workplace structure, personal habits, and individual differences interact over time.

At its heart, the novel is about the difference between endurance and sustainability. Maren does not need to abandon the life she has built in order to change it. She must instead learn to recognize that listening to physical and emotional limits is not a failure of discipline, that strength does not require turning exhaustion into a measure of commitment, and that a routine can remain meaningful even after a person decides it no longer deserves complete control over her life.
