Halloween night in Maple Hollow is dark, cold, and full of excitement. Twelve-year-old twins Ava and Aiden Mercer are dressed for Halloween. Ava is a witch, and Aiden is a vampire. They are disappointed because their parents are going to a Halloween dinner and have hired a babysitter to stay with them.
At seven o’clock, the doorbell rings. When their father opens the door, everyone is shocked. Their babysitter is a seven-foot-tall green monster named Mr. Grumble. He has horns, large claws, glasses, a yellow sweater vest, a pumpkin bow tie, a black suitcase, and a pink umbrella.
Mr. Grumble explains that he works for a magical babysitting agency. A mistake with a magic portal sent him to the human world instead of a monster family’s home.
At first, Ava and Aiden are afraid of him. Soon, however, they learn that Mr. Grumble is friendly, funny, and kind. Together, they bake monster-shaped cookies and make green monster pancakes.
Then trouble begins. Three small magical creatures escape from Mr. Grumble’s suitcase and run into Maple Hollow. Ava, Aiden, and Mr. Grumble chase them through the neighborhood and safely catch them.
Later, they discover that a huge six-legged Shadow Hound has also entered their world. Mr. Grumble bravely protects the twins until magical helpers arrive and take the creature home.
At midnight, Mr. Grumble must return through the portal. Before leaving, he gives Ava and Aiden silver badges for their courage and kindness.
The twins are sad to see him go, but they have learned an important lesson. Someone who looks frightening may actually have a gentle and loving heart. We should not decide whether people are good or bad only because of how they look.
Mr. Grumble arrived as a frightening stranger, but he left as Ava and Aiden’s trusted friend—and the best babysitter they had ever known.
