Nobody notices when the first prayer goes unanswered.

A little girl dies in Paris despite a seventy-two-hour vigil. A passenger jet falls from the sky while thousands pray online. Miracles stop. Every religion on Earth reports the same thing at the same moment: the line went dead.

Scientists celebrate.

Then people begin dreaming of the same place.

An endless cathedral beneath the earth. Something enormous hanging from its ceiling, chained upside down — a being so ancient its body has become the roots of every religion ever practiced. It isn't God. It's what kept something else asleep. For seventy-three thousand years, every prayer ever spoken fed its chains. Every whispered *Amen*, every chant, every sacrifice strengthened a prison no one knew existed.

Faith is dying. The chains are breaking.

When forensic linguist Nadia Kern is called to analyze a cluster of suicide notes, she finds an impossible pattern: forty-seven people across nine languages, all stopping mid-sentence. All approaching the same word. And stopping — as if something in them refused to write it. She traces the pattern backward through centuries of human writing and finds it has always been there. A word no human being has ever spoken aloud. A sentence that every language on Earth is capable of forming and that, across all of recorded history, no speaker has ever completed.

Because the thing below doesn't need worship.

It needs someone to accidentally say a sentence they don't know they're forming.

And every conversation on Earth is slowly mutating toward it.

Nadia has days to stop eight billion people from saying a single sentence — one they don't even know exists. But the closer she gets to understanding the forbidden construction, the more the world begins to come apart: mirrors stop reflecting people destined to die, towns vanish from maps while everyone still remembers visiting them, and a whisper begins — not heard with the ears, but felt inside the mind — speaking in the voice of your dead mother, your lost child, your buried grief.

I remember the version of you that deserved to live.

THE LAST PRAYER is a novel of existential horror in which the monster is language itself — and the reader has already read every word needed to complete the sentence.

Perfect for fans of Paul Tremblay, Catriona Ward, and Josh Malerman.
