Пра гэту электронную кнігу
This new novel from a Hugo Award winner asks: What if the United States won World War II not with an atomic bomb but with alien technology scavenged from a UFO?
1956. FDR, President of the most powerful nation in history, is running for a seventh term. Two decades after an alien ship crashed in the American desert, its reverse-engineered technology has remade the world: flying cars, single-injection cancer cures, sentient robots, and intercontinental rocket travel. The United States used that same technology to defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, then the Soviet Union and Communist China. But all is not well in victorious America. Spies have infiltrated its institutions, and even its closest allies chafe under American domination.
Sylvia Altstatt, a veteran of World War II now working with the OSS, is the intelligence weapon no other country has: the only living person able to pilot the Loops, an alien device that lets its user relive the crumbling memories of the recently dead. With her partner Alvin Greenly she hunts assassins, double agents, and rumors of a second alien ship. But when FDR's internal enemies seize power, Sylvia and Alvin find themselves hunted by the country they helped defend, while the Russians build a weapon with the power to permanently shift the global balance.
The Disintegration Loops by Ray Nayler asks what happens when the system that carried a nation to victory begins to falter and decay. This is science fiction at its most compelling and prescient: a philosophical reckoning with technology, power, and national frailty.
