The Castle

The Castle was the second of Franz Kafka’s three great novels to be published after The Trial, and it was the first to receive an English translation. All three were unfinished at the time of his early death. Despite later re-translation, and a restructuring by Kafka’s literary executor Max Brod to add additional fragments not present in this translation, this original version remains eminently readable and contains an appendix by Brod describing some of the proposed story changes, and a possible conclusion, that Kafka had discussed with him.
