The first book starts off as a post-apocalypse survival story following the 1890 meteorite storm that threatens the survival of the human race then quickly morphs into a Steampunk Romance of the Princess Clara, of the Ohio Sphere, as she plans to flee an abusive suitor into the dangerous "Outside." Meanwhile, the genetically engineered descendants of survivors who did not entrance into the sheltering Spheres have been plotting how to open a Sphere and begin negotiations with the inhabitants to bolster their declining population. Which leads to multiple kidnappings, courtships and quarrels which in turn lead to generalized chaos. To be fair, there are more books in the series; in which, presumably, Princess Clara sorts out which suitor, of a half-dozen who might leave the choice to her, she will pick--assuming she can stay out of the control of several who would claim her against her will
