About this ebook

Yesterday, you made a decision and got a good outcome. You congratulated yourself. Last month, you made a decision and got a bad outcome. You questioned yourself. In both cases, you made the same mistake: you judged the decision by its outcome.

Everyone does this. When changing jobs, making an investment, deciding whether to stay in a relationship, or choosing whom to bring onto a team. If the outcome is good, you call it “the right decision.” If the outcome is bad, you begin sentences with “I wish I had…” But have you ever asked yourself this: What if the good outcome was just luck? What if the bad outcome was the unlucky version of a good decision?

“The OutcomeTrap.” This is not merely the title of a book. It is one of the most unsettling conclusions reached by more than half a century of research in decision science.

And once you truly understand this conclusion, the way you make decisions changes.

Think about it: Why is everyone in some meetings outwardly aligned, while no one internally believes the decision is right? Why do you keep investing more money in a project simply because you do not want “everything spent so far to go to waste”? Why do you perceive some risks as larger than they really are, and others as smaller? Why does the first number you hear end up shaping your final decision?

All of these have names. All of them have mechanisms. And all of them have a structure that begins to lose its power the moment you recognize it.

The Outcome Trap breaks the anatomy of decision-making into its parts. It shows the moments when the mind deceives you. It explains how to work with uncertainty instead of fighting it. And it does this not only for individual decisions, but also for strategic decisions made at the executive table, the collective blind spots of teams, and the systematic decision traps of organizations. It sells no formula for “perfect decisions in five steps,” nor does it deliver an academic lecture. It weaves together a line of thought stretching from Aristotle to Kahneman, from Herbert Simon to artificial intelligence, with real-life decision scenes, research findings, and observations gathered through one-on-one work with hundreds of executives.

When you read this book, three things will happen:

When you stand before a decision, you will begin to notice the games your mind plays on you. That awareness is the first step toward better decisions.

You will learn to say “I’m not sure” not as a weakness, but as a tool for thinking. Instead of ignoring uncertainty, you will learn to work with it.

When one of your decisions leads to a bad outcome, instead of asking, “What did I do wrong?” you will ask, “Where did my thinking process leave me exposed?” That question will help keep you from falling into the same trap twice.

Based on 281 scientific sources and structured in seven parts and twenty-two chapters, this book presents decision science in Turkish with unprecedented breadth. It offers an integrated framework extending from philosophy to practice, from the individual to the organization, from data to ethics, and from human judgment to artificial intelligence.

Ask yourself one question: Did you evaluate your last major decision by its outcome? If your answer is yes, this book is for you.
