About this ebook

This book is a memoir of my life spent as a child in Bal Mandir, one of the most reputed and biggest children's homes in Nepal. Although the book focuses on life in Bal Mandir, it traces the reasons and conditions that land children in institutional care, details the realities of the environment, and examines how these organizations sustain themselves through donors and continuous donations. The kinds of donors and social workers it sees over time is a fact that will completely challenge preconceived notions of people outside the world.

It explores the daily realities, such as the food we ate, and asks a deeper psychological question: is life in Bal Mandir truly vastly different, or does that difference lie entirely in the minds of people who never tire of viewing us as outsiders?

Fascinated by psychology since my teenage years, I have tried to analyze the behaviors manifesting around us—from the top-level officers working in the Nepal Children’s Organization (NCO) down to the junior staff. Society constantly insists we are inherently "different," but this book looks at who truly creates that divide. This is not an angle from an outsider or a so-called expert psychologist. It is an authentic account from a child who lived there for fourteen years from the age of three, watching everyone while growing up.

In doing so, the book wrestles with the complex, pungent questions that arise when observing this world up close:

What if the woman you hate is also your mother?

What is our identity, anyway? Why do some people suffer from a deep identity crisis—even with both of their parents around?

When life strips everything away, what is the true difference between dignity and self-respect?

Ultimately, I have spent my adult life trying to understand my childhood. Our past is not the trail of a crime; it is simply a collection of unexpected situations we could not escape. Now it really does not matter what the people around me think or their perspectives about us. The core purpose of this book is an independent journey of self-discovery—to understand my own behavior and chart my transformation from a sleepwalker into someone living life with a true purpose.

About the author

Sunita Giri is a writer, blogger, and a proud, unashamed alumna of Bal Mandir—the largest care home in Nepal. Growing up alongside two hundred children, she received a raw, firsthand education in human psychology long before building a successful career in Kathmandu's five-star luxury hospitality industry.

A pioneer in digital storytelling, Sunita became one of Nepal's top international bloggers within just six months of launching her platform in 2011. Today, she runs her own independent social initiatives, operating completely free from the patronizing boundaries of the mainstream NGO industry.

Rejecting the clichéd narrative of selling childhood tears for societal pity, Sunita writes strictly on her own terms. Her work serves as a fierce declaration of personal sovereignty, dark humor, and unshakeable emotional strength. She does not offer a generic sob story; instead, she holds up a mirror to the hypocrisies of the outside world while celebrating the absolute freedom of an untamed spirit.

Beyond the written word, she channels this same vibrant energy into direct action—knitting colorful, handcrafted creations to keep children warm. If you love the vibrant caps worn by the children in her photos, you can recreate these designs yourself while directly supporting her ongoing mission. Her exclusive pattern book Let’s Knit Caps,  is available for download right here on Google Play Books.
