About this ebook

In a culture saturated with certainty, Freud teaches us how to ask harder questions.

Nearly one hundred years after its original publication, The Future of an Illusion remains one of the most penetrating and provocative critiques of religion ever written. Clearly fascinated with religion, Sigmund Freud argues that belief is shaped less by reason or evidence than by deep human longings—for protection, order, meaning, and consolation in the face of suffering and uncertainty.

With an extensive introduction and reader-guiding annotations by religion scholar David R. Morris, this new annotated edition brings Freud’s unsettling insights into urgent conversation with twenty-first-century America, where religion continues to shape politics, identity, nationalism, and public life. Morris explores how Freud’s analysis that religion is often a projection of our own needs provides a stronger explanation for why rational arguments alone often fail to change deeply held religious and political convictions.

For readers wrestling with the contradictions between professed religious values and contemporary political realities, this edition of The Future of an Illusion offers psychological depth and clarity. Yet beyond its intellectual importance, Freud’s writing remains a sheer pleasure to read. Unsparing, incisive, and unexpectedly witty, Freud’s courageous willingness to ask difficult questions about why humans believe what they believe makes this classic work required reading for our time.

About the author

Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) was an Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis, a framework for understanding the unconscious mind and its influence on behavior. He developed influential theories on repression, dreams, and psychological development, including the Oedipus complex. His major works, such as The Interpretation of Dreams, profoundly shaped psychology. Though controversial, Freud’s ideas continue to inform debates about human motivation, psychotherapy, and cultural criticism.

David Morris, PhD (Drew University), is a lifelong student of psychology and religion, and the author of Lost Faith and Wandering Souls. He has served professionally for major national publishing brands and worked with bestselling authors and books. He is the publisher of Lake Drive Books and literary agent at Hyponymous Consulting, two innovative ventures working together to specialize in authors and books that help people heal, grow, and discover. He lives with his wife in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and they have two daughters.
