Shawn Nichols is a personal finance writer and educator who has spent more than fifteen years helping individuals and families build financial stability on limited incomes. His work focuses on practical, actionable strategies that work within the constraints of real-world budgets, rather than abstract advice designed for hypothetical ideal circumstances. He has written for NerdWallet, The Penny Hoarder, and Bankrate, and his financial planning curriculum has been used by nonprofit organizations serving low-to-moderate-income communities across twelve states.
Nichols came to personal finance through lived experience, not academic theory. After graduating from a state university with a degree in economics, he spent several years working irregular jobs—retail, food service, freelance writing—while learning firsthand how traditional financial advice often fails people with unstable incomes. The strategies in this book were developed and tested during that period, refined through hundreds of conversations with people who had been told they were "bad with money" when in reality they simply lacked a system designed for their actual circumstances.
He is the founder of the Stability Project, a free online resource that provides budgeting tools, emergency fund calculators, and financial planning worksheets for households earning under $50,000 per year. He also serves on the board of Financial Empowerment Alliance, a nonprofit that delivers personal finance workshops to high school students and community college students in underserved areas.
Nichols lives in Portland, Oregon, with his partner and two dogs. When he's not writing or teaching, he volunteers as a tax preparer through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, helping low-income families claim credits and refunds they would otherwise miss. *The Emergency Fund Blueprint* is his first book.
