About this ebook

Small Space, Big Design is a detailed, practical guide to The Interior Design Handbook for Small Spaces for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include The Small-Space Mindset Shift, Measure Twice, Design Once, The Light Layering System, How Color Tricks the Eye, Vertical Thinking from Floor to Ceiling, Furniture That Earns Its Square Footage, The Closet Transformation, The Small Kitchen Makeover, The Tiny Bathroom Solution, Living Rooms That Breathe, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

Sandra Harris is an interior designer and space-planning specialist based in Portland, Oregon, with over fifteen years of experience transforming compact homes into functional, beautiful living environments. She holds a degree in Environmental Design from the University of Oregon and trained under several leading residential designers in the Pacific Northwest before founding her own practice, Harris Interiors, in 2012.

Her work has been featured in *Dwell*, *Apartment Therapy*, and *Better Homes & Gardens*, and she has been a featured speaker at the Northwest Design Festival and the AIA Portland Design Conference. She is known for her practical, no-nonsense approach to design — she believes that a beautiful home should be one you actually live in, not one you're afraid to touch. Her clients range from young professionals furnishing their first studio apartments to families adapting to smaller homes in dense urban neighborhoods.

Sandra's design philosophy centers on three principles: measure everything, edit ruthlessly, and never compromise on quality for the things you use every day. She is a proponent of the "thirty-day test," in which clients live in a space for a month before making any design decisions — a practice that has saved countless clients from expensive mistakes.

She lives in a 650-square-foot bungalow in Portland's Hawthorne district, where she tests every strategy she writes about before sharing it with her readers. *Small Space, Big Design* is her first book.
