About this ebook

Overview

The Snow Does Not Forget is a slow-burn murder mystery set in the frozen hill town of Chamba in December 1978. Its central question — posed by the author himself in the opening note — is: what does justice look like when the law has failed for twenty years? The novel follows the investigation into the death of Vikram Sood, a 48-year-old retired civil engineer and moneylender, but it is ultimately a story about a woman who committed a crime that the novel refuses to call a crime without qualification, and a detective who must decide what to do when the truth and the law point in opposite directions.

Setting and Context

Chamba is described as a town that winter buries alive — tucked into the narrow Ravi river valley in what was, in 1978, a newly formed Himachal Pradesh. By December, the temperature drops below freezing before sunset, the higher roads are sealed with ice, and the Ravi river turns grey and whispers instead of roaring. It is a town with one police station, one telephone exchange, and the kind of silence in which secrets breed.

The author's note draws attention to a crucial historical fact: in 1978, domestic violence in India existed in a legal vacuum. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act would not be passed until 2005. A woman in an abusive marriage had, in practice, no legal recourse. This context is not background — it is the novel's moral spine.

About the author

Siddharth Singh was born and raised in Varanasi, the ancient city on the banks of the Ganga — a place that teaches you, from childhood, that life and death are never far apart. It is perhaps no surprise that he grew up to write stories about the thin membrane between the two.

He completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, where he first developed a deep interest in the natural world — in soil, seasons, and the quiet rhythms of growth and decay that govern life in the Indian heartland. He went on to earn his Master of Science in Agriculture from Banaras Hindu University, one of India’s oldest and most storied institutions, located in his home city of Varanasi.

It may seem a long journey from the agricultural sciences to a murder mystery set in the Himalayan winter of 1978. But Siddharth will tell you it is not. His training taught him to look carefully at the evidence before him, to distrust easy conclusions, and to understand that the most important things — the health of a field, the guilt of a person, the grief of a widow — are rarely visible on the surface. You have to dig.

The Snow Does Not Forget is his debut work of fiction. The cold of Chamba, the weight of justice, and the moral complexity of its characters have occupied him for several years. He has walked those Himachal valleys, felt that December chill, and carried those questions home with him to the ghats of Varanasi, where the river keeps its own counsel about what it has seen.

He lives in Varanasi, where he continues to write.
