The proponents of AI share a religiosity, a belief in its superior intelligence over that of human intelligence. It has parallels with the belief in divinities of former ages. The omniscience of God, the all knowing entity, that humanity bowed down before in supplication. The question, must then arise, who controls the AI? Who can turn it on or off? The US stock market is driven by this AI revolution, with the corporations making the super chips necessary for it and those building the super sized server facilities required and the AI companies themselves vying for supremacy all the flavour of the month. AI is powered by greed and blind faith in its effective superiority in the workplace and everywhere, eventually. As with religion, there is no grand plan for where this will take humanity, rather, it is driven by fervour and market forces.
If you look beneath the surface, under the hood, and ask yourself some basic questions like - What will we all do when all the jobs are being done by AI? Where will we derive our incomes from and who will buy stuff if they have no income? These go to the heart of the extreme changes posed by the AI revolution. Already power in our world has shifted to a tiny percentage of us, a few billionaires and digital oligarchs. The AI transformation will strip human beings of their dignity and self-esteem derived from work, along with the economic transaction underpinning capitalism - labour sold to employers. Have any of these AI gurus shared with us what is going to happen to fill these basic human needs? No, the Sam Altman's and Elon Musk's are too busy selling AI to the highest corporate bidders in an effort to get returns on their trillion dollar investments to worry about the hundreds of millions of human beings to be displaced by their technology. This fact reflects the very nature of what is going on - humanity to the dustbin and their AI to the pinnacle of things. The world, their world, no longer needs billions of people and so the demise of the excess will follow. American capitalism has been on a ruthless journey and its endpoint will be our endpoint, quite literally. Investors will get to hang around for a bit longer but the workers are superfluous to requirements in the Age of AI.
