About this ebook

Richard F. Burton's Supplemental Nights opens a glittering crossroads of Arabian Nights adventure, where sultans, captains of police, lovers, thieves, and cunning women collide in tales of wit, desire, and power. From the justice-minded Bibars of Cairo, who summons storytellers to reveal the secrets of ordinary life, to courtly intrigues involving jealous governors, secret lovers, and resourceful women who turn accusation into triumph, the collection delights in moral reversals and unexpected outcomes. Alongside these vivid narratives are lavish episodes of royal marriage, musical gatherings, and gifted damsels whose songs of longing and reunion transform the court into a stage for emotion and beauty. Burton's volume is also a comparative study of storytelling itself, tracing related plots through Persian, Indian, Turkish, European, and other traditions. The result is both an entertaining sequence of romantic and adventurous tales and a fascinating meditation on how stories travel, change, and endure. As Shahrazad moves from one lesson to the next, the book promises further cycles of intrigue, justice, and wonder. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

Sir Richard Francis Burton was one of the most extraordinary figures of the nineteenth century: soldier, explorer, linguist, ethnographer, translator, and writer, as well as a restless challenger of Victorian convention. Born in 1821 and educated in England and abroad, he spent much of his life moving across cultures, serving in India, traveling through Africa and the Middle East, and mastering an astonishing range of languages and dialects. His literary reputation rests not only on his adventurous travel writing and bold observations of foreign societies, but also on his ambitious translations and editorial work, which helped open English-language readers to texts and traditions that had long been distant from them. Among his most important achievements was his celebrated engagement with the stories of the Islamic and Middle Eastern world, rendered with scholarship, curiosity, and a willingness to confront subjects many of his contemporaries avoided. Burton's work often explores desire, faith, disguise, power, and the tensions between civilization and instinct, themes that still feel strikingly modern in a world preoccupied with cultural exchange, identity, and the ethics of representation. He remains significant today for his fearless intellect, his appetite for difference, and his ability to make the unfamiliar vivid, even when his views were shaped by the limitations of his era. Readers who enjoy adventurous scholarship, cross-cultural literature, and richly textured prose will find him especially rewarding.
