A classic book and a classic look back into the life of the early twenties. Written by Rex Beach a contemporary Author of that time he gives a interesting perspective of the life of a showgirl who openly trades on the one commodity that she has. We get a chance to look at society from a perspective of a very beautiful showgirl as she weaves through various morals dilemmas while skillfully avoiding pitfalls that have taken other women down. In this life we feel a palpable sense of apprehension as we see her struggle. As she attends various functions and parties as a paid companion. We get to see from her perspective men of power and wealth who feel everything is theirs for the taking including the young women. As you can see throughout the book the author possesses a great ability to paint characters and is able to capture a snapshot of the culture of that period. Be prepared though this is a moralizing tale of a young woman striving to keep her values and her sense of self whole as she faces temptations.
