Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from #1 New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

I couldn't get into this book whatsoever. Most of the characters were insufferable. The plot of the story wasn't as epic as everyone had hyped this up to be. Constant overuse of repetitive words and topics, a really cringeworthy and predictable romance that's always in the spotlight when things are trying to be interesting. The ending of this book angered me because the entire thing was a waste of time. Immature fantasy romance with a boring plot. Over hyped.

interesting premises. School / trials are fun story tools/clichés that I always enjoy, but I expect characters to evolve and develop from their challenges. the magic is a delight. The characters are 100% written as tell not show. the characters are 1-dimensional clichés, maybe mentally deficient... we are TOLD fragile, best friend, struggling, etc. but not shown. for as many pages as this book has, it's a lot of nothing. it's a quick, simple read that enjoyable for what it is. I can enjoy a wide variety of genres through my visual media; however, when I choose to read, I like to be challenged, see intricate development, novel words, or clever prose. this book, is not for me🤷🏼‍♂️

The absolute brutality of this book cannot be overstated. Classmates are actively encouraged to murder each other, yet somehow are supposed to work as a team in battle. If you die, good riddance, that is one less weakling to get in the way. An instructor deliberately kills a whole group of trainees, nobody even blinks. And those are the GOOD guys. I don't mind sex, but the romance novel infatuation with the bad boy (a murderer, of course) is just laughable. The contradictions are endless.
