Plot First is a detailed, practical guide to Plot and Structure for Your First Novel for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Find Your Story Engine, Plot From Character, The Three-Act Architecture, Plot Points That Change Everything, Build Your Plotter's Compass, Outline Before You Bleed, Engineer Scenes That Push the Story, Choose the Lens That Serves the Plot, Subplots as a Second Engine, Suspense: The Science of Releasing Information, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

Autoren-Profil

Cherie Caruso has spent nearly two decades helping writers understand why readers turn pages. She began her career as a freelance fiction editor, reading more than a thousand manuscripts before she ever taught a class, and she has since led craft workshops at writing conferences and regional literary centers across the United States. Her short stories have appeared in literary magazines including *Grist*, *Booth*, and the *Southeast Review*.

*Plot First: Plan a Conflict-Driven Story From First Spark to Final Scene* is her first book, built from the classroom handouts, whiteboard diagrams, and hallway conversations of more than a decade of teaching. Writers tell her they learned more about structure in one weekend workshop than in years of writing alone, and she wrote this book to give that weekend to everyone who cannot attend.

When she is not teaching, Caruso is at work on a novel set in the Pacific Northwest — a ghost story about inheritance, ambition, and the things a family builds to forget. She lives in Oregon with her family and a small dog that appears in none of her books but supervises all of them.
