The priest was in a spiritual prison. All his life he had been a prisoner of a false religion which told him that as long as he did his best to be morally "good" he would be too good for hell. Looking back at his life, he doesn't see his sins and need of forgiveness and redemption by the cross of Christ. Being unsaved, he is spiritually dead. He does not have the Holy Spirit and does not know Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord, so it is not surprising that the story ends the way it does. His "far worse crime" was his betrayal of Christ in the apostate church he had chosen over gospel truth and God's gift of salvation. Being spiritually dead, he was in the power of Satan and was therefore unable to repent and turn to Christ for forgiveness.
