PIERRE TODD is a digital illustrator and art educator with over a decade of experience working across publishing, advertising, and independent creative projects. His work has appeared in editorial illustrations, book covers, marketing campaigns, and gallery exhibitions internationally.
Todd began his career as a traditional sketch artist before transitioning fully to digital media in 2013, a shift that fundamentally changed the way he approaches both teaching and making art. He believes that the barrier to entry for digital illustration has never been lower, and that structured, project-based learning is the most effective way for beginners to build real skills without becoming overwhelmed by the sheer number of tools and techniques available.
As the founder of Studio Draft, an online learning platform focused on foundational art skills for digital creators, Todd has developed curricula used by thousands of students across more than fifty countries. His teaching philosophy centers on the idea that technical mastery and creative confidence grow together—that learning how to control a brush and learning how to trust your instincts are not separate goals but the same one.
He is the author of three previous books on digital creativity, including *The Digital Sketchbook* and *Color Fundamentals for Screen Artists*, both of which have been adopted as supplementary texts in university-level digital arts programs. His writing avoids unnecessary jargon and instead focuses on practical, repeatable processes that students can apply immediately to their own work.
In addition to teaching and writing, Todd continues to work as a commercial illustrator with clients in the gaming, publishing, and tech industries. He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he maintains a small studio practice and spends time hiking the Pacific Northwest with his family.
He believes the single most important quality for any aspiring illustrator is not talent but persistence, and he wrote this book to give beginners the clearest possible path from zero to finished artwork.
