यो इ-पुस्तकका बारेमा

De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things) is a first-century BC didactic poem by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius (c. 99 BC – c. 55 BC) with the goal of explaining Epicurean philosophy to a Roman audience. The poem, written in some 7,400 dactylic hexameters, is divided into six untitled books, and explores Epicurean physics through poetic language and metaphors. Namely, Lucretius explores the principles of atomism; the nature of the mind and soul; explanations of sensation and thought; the development of the world and its phenomena; and explains a variety of celestial and terrestrial phenomena. The universe described in the poem operates according to these physical principles, guided by fortuna ("chance"), and not the divine intervention of the traditional Roman deities.

लेखकको बारेमा

Titus Lucretius Carus, a Roman poet and philosopher of the 1st century BCE, remains a fascinating figure in the annals of classical literature. Born around 99 BCE, Lucretius lived during a tumultuous period marked by political upheaval and social transformation in Rome. His life, shrouded in mystery, has been the subject of much speculation, with some ancient sources suggesting he may have suffered from bouts of madness, possibly induced by a love potion.Lucretius is celebrated for his profound contributions to Epicurean philosophy, advocating for a life free from the fear of gods and death. His revolutionary ideas challenged the religious and superstitious norms of his time, promoting a worldview grounded in reason and empirical observation. He delved into the nature of the universe, the development of life, and the workings of the human mind, laying the groundwork for future scientific thought. His work significantly influenced contemporary and later thinkers, including Cicero and Virgil, and left an indelible mark on the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods. Modern readers might find Lucretius's fearless questioning of accepted beliefs and his poetic exploration of complex philosophical ideas particularly compelling. Despite the controversies surrounding his life and the radical nature of his ideas, Lucretius's legacy endures, inviting us to ponder the mysteries of existence with a blend of curiosity and skepticism.
