Acerca deste libro electrónico

While the study of the atom focuses on the behavior of orbiting electrons, Nuclei dives deep into the incredibly dense, positively charged core at the center of the atom: the nucleus. Composed of protons and neutrons (collectively called nucleons), the nucleus holds more than 99.9% of an atom's total mass despite occupying only a tiny fraction of its volume.

The existence of a stable nucleus presents a fundamental puzzle: since protons are positively charged, they experience strong electrostatic repulsion that should tear the core apart. This is prevented by the strong nuclear force, a highly powerful, short-range attractive force that acts equally between protons and neutrons, binding them tightly together.

The stability of a nucleus depends heavily on its binding energy. Nuclei that are unstable naturally undergo radioactivity, emitting alpha, beta, or gamma radiation to reach a more stable configuration. This chapter also explores how manipulating nuclear bonds unlocks tremendous energy through two primary processes:

Nuclear Fission: The splitting of a heavy, unstable nucleus into lighter fragments (the basis for nuclear reactors).

Nuclear Fusion: The forcing together of light nuclei to form a heavier one (the process that powers the sun).
