In this section, Conrad reflects on humanity and freedom amid war and political upheaval, showing particular concern for Poland’s partition and struggle for independence. In essays such as “Autocracy and War” and “Poland Revisited,” he critiques imperialism and oppression with sharp insight. His writings on the Titanic disaster highlight mankind’s arrogance and disregard for life, while expressing deep reverence for the sea. Wartime essays portray the emotional and physical atmosphere of World War I with realism and sensitivity. This part documents Conrad’s engagement with his times, both as an author and as a conscientious observer of history.
